Background of the study :
Vocational training has become a pivotal element in enhancing job readiness among undergraduates, particularly in regions where the demand for practical skills is rapidly increasing. In Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State, the employment landscape is undergoing significant transformation driven by technological advancements and changing economic paradigms. Vocational training programs have been introduced as a strategic intervention to bridge the gap between theoretical academic learning and the practical requirements of the modern job market. Studies (Fashola, 2023; Mohammed, 2024) indicate that graduates who undergo vocational training are better prepared to meet the specific demands of employers, demonstrating improved technical competence, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. The curricula in these programs are designed to provide hands-on training in various technical and vocational skills that are directly applicable to the workplace. Such training not only equips students with the necessary technical expertise but also fosters soft skills, such as communication and teamwork, which are essential for effective job performance. The initiative to integrate vocational training into undergraduate education is supported by local government policies that emphasize skills development as a key strategy for reducing youth unemployment and enhancing economic productivity. In addition, industry partnerships have played a crucial role in shaping the content and delivery of vocational training, ensuring that the skills taught are relevant and up-to-date. Despite these positive developments, challenges remain in ensuring that all undergraduates have equal access to quality vocational training. Resource constraints, varying standards of instruction, and limited exposure to real-world job environments continue to pose significant hurdles. Moreover, there is a need for continuous assessment and updating of vocational curricula to keep pace with the evolving technological landscape (Garba, 2025). This study seeks to critically examine the impact of vocational training on job readiness among undergraduates in Bauchi, focusing on how these programs influence graduates’ preparedness for the labor market, their technical proficiency, and their ability to adapt to diverse work environments.
Statement of the problem :
Notwithstanding the implementation of vocational training programs in Bauchi Local Government Area, undergraduates continue to face challenges in attaining optimal job readiness. A significant problem is the disparity between the skills imparted through training and those demanded by modern employers. Many graduates report that while they acquire foundational technical skills, the training often falls short in providing advanced competencies and real-life work experience necessary for smooth transition into employment (Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, inconsistent training standards across different institutions and limited access to state-of-the-art equipment further compound this issue. Employers in the region have expressed concerns regarding the practical readiness of graduates, noting that there is often a gap in their ability to handle complex job responsibilities. This disconnect not only undermines the objectives of vocational training but also contributes to high rates of underemployment among graduates. Moreover, resource limitations and inadequate teacher training result in a learning environment that is less conducive to the acquisition of critical job skills. The absence of structured internship or apprenticeship opportunities exacerbates the problem, leaving graduates without the necessary exposure to actual work conditions. Consequently, the effectiveness of vocational training in preparing students for the demands of the modern workplace is called into question. This study aims to investigate these challenges by exploring the relationship between vocational training and job readiness, identifying the core areas where training programs are deficient, and proposing targeted solutions to enhance the overall preparedness of undergraduates for the workforce (Udo, 2024).
